This systematic review and meta-analysis of 19 trials involving 3567 participants found that chatbot interventions are effective for increasing physical activity, fruit and vegetable consumption, sleep duration and sleep quality. The effects of the interventions equated to increases of +735 steps per day, +1 serving of fruit and vegetables per day, and +45 min of sleep per night. Both short- and longer-term interventions and chatbot only and multicomponent interventions were effective, with evidence to suggest that text-based chatbots may be more effective than voice chatbots for improving fruit and vegetable consumption, and multicomponent interventions more effective than chatbot-only interventions for improving sleep duration and sleep quality.
