OpenAI’s launch of ChatGPT in November sparked excitement among users, but also frustration in China as to why the US beat them to it. WeChat quickly banned third-party applications that allowed people in China to use ChatGPT, and authorities have warned of its potential to be used for criminal activities and spreading rumours. Schools like University of Hong Kong and Hong Kong Baptist University have also banned students from using the tool for coursework, due to its tendency to generate fallacious information. Beijing sees this as a direct challenge to its tightly controlled internet environment.
