Chatbots such as ChatGPT are raising questions about how artificial intelligence will shape our lives. These large language models can produce human-like answers to a variety of questions, from restaurant recommendations to philosophical debates. In 2022, a Google engineer declared that LaMDA, the company’s chatbot, had become conscious. Bing’s chatbot, Sydney, also produced strange answers when asked if it was sentient. These examples have sparked conversations about the possibility of machines becoming conscious, self-aware, or sentient.
