Google has been researching and developing Generative AI technology since 2020, with the goal of making it available to the public. The technology, called LaMDA, was created by the team behind Meena and was intended to be integrated into products such as Google Search and Google Assistant. Sources have revealed that Google was internally toying with the idea of making this chatbot available to the public in a limited manner.
