Microsoft recently announced that Xbox will now be “Carbon Aware”. It will download updates during periods of low carbon intensity on the power grid. Public cloud providers are constantly improving their environmental impact, yet there is room for improvement. Data centres consume between 220 and 320 terawatt-hours (TWh) of electricity, which is around one percent of the world’s electricity demand in 2021. Projections suggest that the electricity demand of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) could triple by 2030, if no action is taken. To reduce the carbon footprint of cloud computing, various solutions have been proposed, such as improving the efficiency of data centres, using renewable energy sources, and optimizing workloads.
