San Francisco city officials and residents are divided on whether they should allow robotic taxis to operate during daylight hours. Autonomous car companies Waymo and Cruise are advocating for the referendum, citing increased road safety, decreased traffic, and improved quality of life for city residents. Critics point to a history of malfunctions and safety risks, with experts such as Freeman Spogli Institute adjunct lecturer Jerry Kaplan expressing concerns about the cars’ safety. Adyasha Mohanty, a fifth-year aeronautics and astronautics Ph.D. student, also echoed Kaplan’s concerns about the difficulty of interpreting and conveying signals without a human driver. The California Public Utilities Commission will vote on the referendum on August 10.
