Mary “Missy” Cummings is a professor of engineering and computer science and ex-National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) adviser who has been outspoken about the industry’s pursuit to figure out Autonomous Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). In a recent interview, she discussed the rapid innovation in the automotive industry and the unintended consequences of the “move fast and break things” ethos. She also highlighted the importance of understanding the limitations of autonomous systems, as they have not yet achieved sentience and are not able to make their own decisions.
