Economists have a poor track record of predicting the future, but there are good reasons to take seriously the potential of AI to transform the economy. This article focuses on the implications of AI on three broad areas of macroeconomic interest: productivity growth, the labor market, and industrial concentration. To get to a better future, creative policy experiments, positive goals for what society wants from AI, and flexibility in evolving with the technological possibilities of AI are needed.
