This study, conducted by researchers from TU Darmstadt, the University of Cambridge, Merck, and TU Munich’s Klinikum rechts der Isar, explored the potential of machine learning (ML) systems in enhancing human work. The study focused on radiologists and their ability to use ML-based decision support systems in medical diagnostics. An experiment was conducted involving radiologists from various clinics to segment brain tumors in MRI images, both with and without the aid of ML-based decision support. The results showed that when radiologists worked with high-performing ML systems, their performance improved significantly. However, the study also highlighted the importance of explainability in ML systems, as lower-performing systems could impair the radiologists’ performance.
