Microsoft is reportedly planning to unveil its first artificial intelligence (AI) chip, codenamed Athena, at its annual developer conference, Ignite 2023. The chip is designed to reduce Microsoft’s dependence on Nvidia’s GPU chips, which are in high demand and short supply for AI applications. Athena is designed to enhance Microsoft’s AI offerings by increasing their processing speed and efficiency. Challenges of using Nvidia’s GPU chips include their expense, energy-intensity, and scarcity. Microsoft’s AI chip, Athena, is designed to solve these challenges.
