UNESCO is leveraging the power of artificial intelligence (AI) to help preserve Europe’s cultural heritage, advance education, and promote scientific cooperation. AI can help with cataloging and documenting cultural artifacts, as well as assessing the structural integrity of aged structures and identifying appropriate restoration procedures. To ensure ethical AI governance, UNESCO, the European Commission, and the Dutch Authority for Digital Infrastructure have launched the “Supervising AI by Competent Authorities” project. This initiative aims to design institutional frameworks for ethical AI governance, aligning with the EU AI Act and UNESCO’s principles.
