The Government of The Bahamas has unveiled a draft Electronic Communications Sector policy for industry and public consultation. The policy identifies the regulation of over-the-top (OTT) service providers, cyber security, and the emergence of artificial intelligence (AI), blockchain and the Internet of Things (IoT) as key challenges that must be addressed. It also calls for the continued engagement of the Caribbean Telecommunications Union (CTU) and the Universal Regulatory Commission of The Bahamas (URCA) to ensure the policy and legal framework is properly aligned with market developments. The policy also seeks to protect citizens and residents of The Bahamas, ensure fair markets, and enforce regulations while allowing new technologies, services and service providers to flourish.
