The European Parliament is set to vote on the AI Act, but agreement on the initiative has fallen apart just days before the vote. The European People’s Party (EPP) has been accused of abusing flexibility by voting to table a separate amendment rather than a simple split vote. Amendments from the Left would delete concessions made to the centre-right, while ECR has tabled amendments to water down the high-risk classification of social media’s recommender systems. Negotiations on the EU’s AI Act and the Council of Europe’s world-first AI treaty have finally aligned, but the US is pushing to water down the latter.
