This article examines the progress of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the past 8 years, focusing on the ability of Google, Apple, Amazon, and Microsoft to recognize primates in images. It discusses the controversy that arose in 2015 when Google Photos labeled a Black person as a “gorilla” and the steps taken by Google to prevent such mistakes from happening again. The article also looks at the current capabilities of Google and Apple in terms of image analysis, and how both companies have disabled the ability to search for primates due to the fear of making offensive mistakes.
