A survey conducted by Stanford University’s Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence (HAI) among natural language processing (NLP) researchers found that 73 percent of them believe AI could lead to revolutionary societal change, while 36 percent believe it could lead to the end of the world. The survey was conducted in May and June 2022, months before the release of ChatGPT, a system that demonstrates capabilities in question answering and text, image and code generation. The HAI report also cited a poll by IPSOS that showed Americans getting warier of AI compared to other nationalities, with only 35 percent of Americans agreeing with the statement that products and services using AI had more benefits than drawbacks. The report also noted that the number of controversies connected to AI surged 26 times over the past decade.
