ChatGPT is an artificial intelligence tool made available for free late last year by OpenAI that can generate essays and stories, write code, and reply to simple prompts. It has become popular, with over a million users and Microsoft investing $10 billion into OpenAI. Other tech companies have been racing to put out competing tools, such as Claude, Bard, and Ernie Bot. While some people are using ChatGPT for entertainment, students are using it to cheat on assignments and exams. Stanford University’s student-run newspaper polled students and 17% said they had used ChatGPT for assignments or exams. Teachers are concerned about the accuracy of the information and the potential for cheating.
