The tech industry is facing an increasing power usage and environmental impact problem due to the rise of cloud and compute-intensive applications such as cryptomining and artificial intelligence. Leslie Miley, a technical adviser to the CTO at Microsoft Corp., warned that computer energy consumption for machine learning systems is on pace to surpass the world’s energy production supply within the next two to three decades. He also noted that the training of a single AI model can now consume more electricity than what is needed to power 100 U.S. homes for an entire year. Miley highlighted the need for sustainability in the tech sector and urged the industry to create technologies that do not push more CO2 into the atmosphere.
