In 1956, mathematician and theoretical biologist Jack D. Cowan visited Wilfred Taylor and his strange new “learning machine”. This machine was performing an “associative memory scheme” and was an early analogue form of a neural network, a precursor to the most advanced artificial intelligence of today. Neural networks incorporate a wide range of systems, and are at the heart of deep learning algorithms. They are mysterious layers of ‘unknowability’ and are inspired by the human brain. Neural networks have long and tangled roots, and are composed of hidden layers that pursue the unexplainable.
