Renowned statistician and emeritus professor at McGill University, Canada, A.M. Mathai recently visited Tirupati for the first annual conference of the newly formed Andhra Pradesh Statistics Association (APSA). In an exclusive interview to The Hindu, he discussed the academic issues plaguing the field of statistics, which has seen a decrease in the number of students opting for the subject due to the inorganic growth of technological education. He believes that motivating students to take statistics as a serious career option is the only way out, as half the jobs in the IT sector are in statistics.
