This article investigates the potential of five microglia/macrophage-related proteins as biomarkers for multiple sclerosis (MS) progression. Using mixed-effects models and machine learning algorithms, the study identifies CHIT1 as a strong predictor for faster disability progression. Single-cell RNA sequencing and immunohistochemistry were also used to understand the phenotype and localization of CHIT1-expressing cells in MS patients.
