A new deepfake face-swapping system is being used by South-East Asian crime syndicates in “pig butchering” cyberscam operations. This technology, along with other AI tools such as generative AI chatbots, is increasing the effectiveness and reach of these scams. However, some operations are having less success with the new tech than others. The syndicates, predominantly Chinese-run, have sprung up in South-East Asia and are targeting victims from different nationalities. The use of AI has led to a surge in scam activity, resulting in billions of dollars in losses.
