Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been playing an increasingly important role in the maritime transportation system (MTS) for several years. AI has been around for more than 70 years, but has only recently gained public awareness. AI refers to the combined intelligence of machines and software and has been personified in science fiction. AI research began with the 1950 description of the Imitation Game by Alan Turing and modern AI relies on deep learning, a combination of machine learning, big data, and neural networks. The digital revolution of the 1960s was key to the development of big data which enabled the development of AI.
