Davide Scaramuzza and his colleagues at the University of Zurich’s Robotics and Perception Group have developed an AI system called Swift that is able to learn real flying skills in a virtual world. The latest breakthrough has seen their deep-learning system beat human champions in FPV racing drones. The system uses reinforcement learning, similar to AlphaGo, to steer high-speed flight around a racing course. This technology has the potential to be used in real-world situations and could have implications for the Ukraine conflict.
