Miaomiao Zhang, an assistant professor at the University of Virginia School of Engineering and Applied Science, is researching a blind spot in artificial intelligence: the inability to recognize all shapes. Current machine-learning models are biased towards recognizing image textures and have limited ability to perceive an object’s global structures. This is a problem in medical imaging, where AI is used to diagnose progressive diseases such as heart failure and Alzheimer’s. Zhang is working to develop AI tools that can recognize and quantify geometric shape changes from medical images in the same way humans can.
