This article discusses the advances in conversational agents since the release of ChatGPT by OpenAI at the end of 2022. It looks at the limits that ChatGPT is still facing on the task of conversation and how it has pushed the boundaries of what is possible. It also looks at the evolution of conversational agents from the first appearance of ELIZA in 1966 to the current customer service bots and voice assistants. Finally, it examines how advances in deep learning have allowed for more flexibility and the emergence of new approaches.
